Scam From Chinese-Speaking Callers
I remembered reading about a scam involving the Singapore Supreme Court or Subordinate court somewhere, and just one or two days later, I received the same call! It was a Chinese voice-automated phone call, and the caller ID showed the dialler came from overseas. It said something about me having a voice message at the Singapore Supreme Court or something and I ended the call immediately.
According to what I read, they would get you to key in your particulars, such as your I/C number, your bank account number and so on. They will even get you to transfer money or something, by claming somebody took your I/C, or you are involved in money laundering.
On another occasion, someone called me and spoke in heavily accented Mandarin. Having heard of similar scams such as you getting a prize or a lucky draw prize, I pretended to speak English only and the person hung up.
I think one teacher lost $60000 in some scam. They told her she won the lottery, and had to join a club in order to claim the prize, and then she had to pay insurance money, and it kept multiplying. As a teacher, she should know better. She claimed it was out of naivety rather than greed.
Oh well, please let your parents or grandparents know about such scams. It used to be jade stone or apple scams, but now, they had developed into using technology to con people. They also use emails to scam people. You don’t want their retirement money to go up in smoke.
