Entrepreneurial Mindset
Many rich people started their own businesses when they were still studying. They were already entrepreneurial at a very young age. Having such a mindset sets them apart from us and thus it is very important to acquire such a mindset of constantly thinking of business opportunities and learning from the experience.
Some famous locals shared their success stories in the books that had written. A famous celebrity, Dick Lee, wrote in his book, The Adventures of the Mad Chinaman, about how he sold porn magazines to his SJI classmates and made big bucks. He bought them cheap from a bookseller and sold at great profits to his classmates.
A motivational speaker and astute businessman, Adam Khoo, wrote about how he set up a mobile disco company while he was still in secondary school. He had approached his classmates to set up this business, but many of them gave excuses that they had no time, their parents would not allow, or they had no money. When they had such mindsets, they would not be able to succeed.
When I was still in secondary one, my friend came up with an idea about selling sweets and chocolates during recess to our classmates. It was rather affordable to enter the market, so I became a shareholder, along with some other classmates. Our business soon expanded to other classes, and even some of the older students frequented our shops. However, we were soon found out by our form teacher, and we had to pay heavy taxes in order to continue our business. As we were unable to buy our goods cheaply, we soon found the business tough going. When we ended our business, I made a grand profit of fifty-cents. That was ok considering I was just a passive stall owner. However, as a passive stall owner, I did not have much say in how the business was run, and hence I was unable to contribute much.
With this little enterprising streak in me, I think the only way to make big money is to go into business. One way you may wish to consider is to go into E-bay, and sell your things. The main thing is to find a niche market and procure your goods cheaply. With a strong demand, you will definitely earn money. After all, old Singapore made its riches as a middleman for the traders in Malay archipelago and the European, Indian and Chinese traders. There is money to be made as a middleman. If not, we will forever be trapped in the rat race.
